Position Summary: The Managing Paralegal performs the program work of a paralegal or legal assistant for the Human Right to Housing Project. The managing paralegal is also responsible for coordinating, training, and providing direct oversight and supervision to paralegals assigned to various projects.

Status: NOLSW Bargaining Unit  
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manages portfolio of projects and assists attorneys with ongoing litigation support including case investigation, drafting legal pleadings, performing document review and document management, and entering and reporting data.
  • Conducts telephone and in-person intakes, opens and maintains electronic and paper case files, participates in fact gathering and appropriate referral, brief service, or advocacy.
  • Participates in outreach, public education, client education, and coalitions as needed.
  • Conducts initial and continuing training of paralegals related to intake process, records management, court processes, legal issue-spotting, and attorney support.
  • Completes timely consultation with other paralegals on non -legal questions, periodic feedback opportunities, and mentorship opportunities for paralegals.
  • Manages workflow management among paralegals to balance intakes, callbacks, docket triage, meetings, and scheduling around holidays and vacations.
  • Manages communications with other projects about housing priorities.
  • Identifies training and professional development opportunities for paralegals in consultation with Managing Project Attorneys and/or Legal Director.
  • Provides oversight and direct supervision of Housing Paralegals including workplan development and conducting periodic evaluations.
  • Develops non legal referral network.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of Associate’s Degree, Paralegal Certificate, and/or demonstrated skills in writing, research, analysis, and communications
  • Spanish/English bilingual (or fluency in writing and speaking is a plus
  • Prior experience leading or managing a team
  • Passion for social justice and commitment to the mission of the Public Justice Center.
  • Understanding the principles of race equity analysis and applying them to the PJC’s organizational life and to our work.
  • Experience with low-income, oppressed, or exploited communities or individuals.
  • Ability to sensitively respond to people seeking services in crisis situations.
  • Experience in law office/ litigation support and case management.
  • Excellent experience using Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) or database programs.
  • Ability and interest in learning new programs.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage complex assignments and work collegially with staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others both in and outside of the PJC, including clients, other advocacy organizations, coalition members, government officials, and attorneys.
  • Able to work both onsite in office, remote (on occasion) and offsite as needed to support operational needs.
  • Able to work flexible hours (Occasional evening and weekend work) as needed to support organizational needs.

  • Normal demands associated with an office work environment.
  • Ability to work on computer for prolonged periods, communicate with individuals in person, by telephone, email, and video conferencing technologies.
  • Ability to travel locally as needed to support organizational needs.

Compensation: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
